Bishop’s life and character were shaped by several key factors including: 1) his parents’ persistence that he and his siblings be brought up in a Godly environment; 2) their parents’ examples centered around hard work, honesty, and the need to be goal oriented; and, 3) the Great Depression.

Suffragan Bishop C. Shawn Tyson was born in Canton, Ohio, the youngest of five siblings born to Bishop James E. Tyson and Lady Evelyn Haynesworth-Tyson. At an early age, young Shawn was exposed to some of gospel music’s finest, beginning with his mother, Lady Evelyn, who was an accomplished directress, singer and musician, and the founder of the world-renown Word Records recording artist, the Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church Concert Choir of Youngstown, Ohio.
